Baghdad, (AKnews) – The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Sunday that the country imports currently 550 Megawatts of electricity from neighboring countries, after it was imported energy was cut from Turkey that was 250 Megawatts due to expiration of the contract, which was one year.
The media spokesman of the ministry , Musab al-Mudares tod AKnews that supplying 500 MW of electricity to Iraq was resumed from Iran during the past few days, while the Ministry seeks to further coordination with Syria to link Iraq to the eight Arab countries linkage Project, which will provide power to Iraq from Egypt.
Several Iraqi cities witnessed last summer, the most widespread protests, especially in Basra because of the electricity crisis that claimed the lives of many people and forced the Minister of Electricity, Karim Wahid to resign for his “failure” to provide electricity to the citizens.
The regional electricity network known as “the Arab project to link eight countries, includes Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Libya and Iraq.

The Syrian Ministry of Electricity announced last week that the electricity project to link power between Syria and Iraq, which was completed recently, will enter service soon, to start talks after that between the two sides on exchanging power mechanism according to the need and possibility.
The electricity network in Iraq suffer from a lack of energy production over the past years due to exposure of the stations and the transport networks to major damage during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, followed by acts of sabotage by armed groups.
Iraqi officials said that the available power of Iraq is approximately nine thousand megawatts (9,000 megawatts), with an estimated demand of up to 14 thousand megawatts (14,000 megawatts) during the summer when temperatures exceed in many cases 55 degrees Celsius.
Iraq plans to increase the capacity of electricity to 27 thousand megawatts (27,000 megawatts) in the next four years, and it needs an investment of not less than three to four billion dollars ($3 billion to $4 billion) a year to be able to achieve this goal.
